The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which is inspired by the research of Dr. Dan Olweus, is a "whole school" approach to the problem of bullying in schools and involves not just teachers and administrators, but classified staff, parents, students, and the community. The Program is evidence-based and data-driven. |

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is
based on a fundamental concept: that the entire school community
must be involved in a bullying prevention plan in order for it to be
effective. That means that teachers, administrators, classified
staff, students, parents and volunteers have a role. Even the
outside community is part of an Olweus Plan. The Olweus program is
data-driven. Each Olweus program begins with a survey of the
students to gauge how extensive bullying is and where it takes place.
Those results are incorporated into the school's bullying prevention plan,
which is developed by a school wide bullying prevention coordinating
committee. The Olweus trainer is a "trainer of trainers" who trains
the coordinating committee during a two day training session. The
committee then trains the rest of the school staff. A year after the
program is rolled out, the students are surveyed again, to judge the
results and effectiveness of the Olweus program in the school. Most
schools report a significant reduction in bullying as a result of
implementing the program. Schools and school districts that adopt the Olweus program should be prepared to incur expenses for the Olweus trainer's professional services and program materials. The materials include a School Wide Guide for the coordinating committee and teacher's guides for the school's teachers. These materials are in CD and DVD formats and include both PDF files that can be printed out, but useful training videos. Schools are also encouraged to purchase committee workbooks for each member of the coordinating committee. There are also materials on classroom meetings and interventions and cyberbullying prevention. All materials are available through the Hazelden Publishing Committee. The United States Olweus program is located at Clemson University in South Carolina. |
